Just Before Dawn’s Light

Here is light plating earth;
sliver sightings of a world not yet

green nor gold, a

pre-dawn pewter that

stems birds just

at the cusp of their awakening

taking choristers’

breath away. All of

this before gold

gilds the earth and

me in wonder at its incipient

coronation – a beneficiary – at this

now silvered sight that

calls, nay, bawls us all into being as

earth is born yet again.

I love these descriptions. …words to attach to the magic of dawn breaking…..and earthly awakenings …thank you

“Pre-dawn pewter” is especially nice. I’ve always preferred pewter to silver, unless it’s jewelry that’s at issue. I like the patina of old pewter, and the softness.

The Spanish have a wonderful word for the time you’re describing: the madrugada. There’s some disagreement about the precise nature of the time — some say between midnight and pre-dawn, while others say it’s that hour just before the first stirrings. But it’s a magical time, for sure.

Thanks for adding madrugada to my vocabulary! A few weeks ago I had been reading in response to not being able to sleep, and started to get drowsy at just this time. It was rather like the light was coming from instead of to the trees and lawn.

Beautiful descriptions, Allen. You’ve said exactly how I felt when I woke to see the pre-dawn this morning xxx
