Reading this a second time, I found myself remembering the old tale of Jack and the Beanstalk — that thick, heavy stalk reaching up to the heavens. I thought of Jacob’s ladder, too — reaching up to the heavens, with the angels going up and down on it. And of course, there’s the Tree of Life — so many images that accord so well with your poem!

The Tree of Life reminded me of this Peter, Paul, and Mary song that includes the imagery. We could stand to hear more of this kind of music these days!

We Scandinavians also have Yggdrasil, the Nordic tree of life that connects the worlds. Trees remain a fascination for most of us, it seems. Thanks so much for the Peter, Paul and Mary link. I ended up listening to a few more of their YouTube videos! Great music indeed.

  3. There’s a church near Rovaniemi Finland where the altar gives rise to a kind of architectural tree stretching up beyond the ceiling….reminds me of this!
