Is there a light
as lovely as a
candle’s? She
makes art
of the wall:
deftly balancing
light and shade
aptly drawing
my eye in, then out
graciously holding
the centre
while caressing
the contours of this space.
She transfixes me, this candle.
She sets me in the room, just so,
and her glow mirrors

I sit in the splendor of this

of shadows settling me.
lovely imagery, The flame masculine, the candle feminine; the carrier and holder of energy. Marie
Glad you enjoyed the play with gender!
It’s so nice to read a poem where the shadows aren’t threatening or filled with demons. They’re only the other side of light — and just as important if an image is to emerge. All light blinds, all darkness conceals, but you’ve captured their interplay perfectly, and the potential there for a new kind of seeing.
Thanks! Yes, a similar kind of logic holds for sound and silence, I think. And I really do find shadows, especially on a wall, soothing.
Wonderful, my favourite one so far. Completely captured a candle metaphorically and literally. Love it.
(Now for something utterly off topic. As a fellow word press user, how did you get the blue frosty picture behind this page?)
Glad you enjoyed it. So, I kind of accidently stumbled onto this, but you will note that the background and the theme photo are the same. Basically, I upload a photo into my media page from my computer. It then has a URL from Word Press. I cut and paste it for both the theme photo and the backdrop. To do that, click on my site, then scroll down to WP Admin. Click on it, then hover over appearance, and click on background. Basically, what it does is it uses a portion of that photo as the back drop. Good luck!
This is absolutely beautiful Allen – well done xxx
Thanks much for your encouragement!
